The problem of Thread broken has been introduced in Down The Hole Drilling Trouble Shooting – Treaded, and in article we will try to explain what caused hammer piston casing breakage and how to fix it.
Piston Casing – Case 1
- Problem
- Longitudinal crack on piston casing
- Probable cause
- Loose joint
- Insufficient make-up torque
- Another sign of this problem is excessive wear on the make up side of the threads
- Corrective action
- Make sure correct make-up torque is applied
Piston Casing – Case 2
- Problem
- Longitudinal crack on piston casing
- Probable cause
- Not chosen the piston casing indicate that wrong type of tools have been used when opening the hammer
- Corrective action
- Use correct tools (chain or petrol type tongs) when loosening the thread connections and apply tools in correct positions
